Wood Characteristics

Hardness

Janka Rating: 1,450 lbf — This high rating signifies outstanding durability and resistance to denting, making Hard Maple perfect for high-traffic areas and commercial applications.

Color/Appearance

Hard Maple features a light sapwood (creamy white to pale tan) and a heartwood that ranges from pale brown to light reddish-brown. The grain is typically straight with a fine, uniform texture, though it can occasionally exhibit a curly or wavy figure. The wood is known for its smooth surface and consistent color, which enhances its visual appeal in finished projects.

Workability

Hard Maple machines well with sharp tools, but its interlocking grain can cause tear-out if not properly managed. It glues and finishes exceptionally well, taking stains and paints uniformly. However, the wood’s hardness can quickly dull cutting tools, requiring frequent sharpening. For finishing, a pre-stain conditioner is recommended to avoid uneven absorption.

Common Uses

Common uses for Hard Maple include furniture, cabinetry, flooring, musical instruments, tool handles, and millwork. Its high durability and resistance to wear make it particularly suitable for commercial applications such as countertops and flooring, where it withstands heavy use with minimal damage.
