Janka Rating: 1,130 lbf — Sycamore’s moderate hardness provides a good balance of durability and ease of working, making it suitable for a wide range of applications from furniture to millwork without requiring excessive tool maintenance.
Sycamore displays a light, creamy white to pale tan heartwood that contrasts beautifully with its bright white sapwood. The grain is typically straight, but often features dramatic variations including interlocking, wavy, and curly patterns that create striking figure in the wood. This distinctive visual character, combined with a smooth texture and fine to medium texture, gives Sycamore a unique and elegant appearance that is particularly valued in high-end furniture and cabinetry.
Sycamore machines well with minimal blunting of tools, though its interlocking grain can cause some tear-out during planing or routing. It glues readily with standard woodworking adhesives and accepts stains uniformly, though a pre-stain conditioner is recommended to avoid blotching due to the wood’s varying density. Finishing is excellent with oil, varnish, or lacquer, and the surface sands to a smooth finish. Care should be taken when sanding across the grain to avoid scratches.
Commonly used for furniture, cabinetry, and interior trim, Sycamore’s attractive grain and workability make it ideal for decorative elements such as tabletops, cabinet doors, and millwork. It is also popular for musical instruments, veneer, and specialty woodworking projects where its unique figure can be showcased. While less common for flooring, it can be used in high-end residential applications where its visual appeal is a priority.
