Wood Characteristics

Hardness

Janka Rating: 1,010 lbf — Walnut offers moderate hardness, making it suitable for furniture and cabinetry while resisting moderate wear and tear. It is less hard than oak but provides a beautiful finish that enhances its natural elegance.

Color/Appearance

Walnut features a heartwood that ranges from light brown to deep chocolate brown, often with subtle purple and red hues. The sapwood is typically a pale cream color, which is usually limited in quantity. Its grain is generally straight to interlocked, with a fine to medium texture, and it is known for its distinctive, often dramatic figure that includes swirls, curls, and occasional burls. This wood is highly regarded for its visual appeal and consistent coloration.

Workability

Walnut machines well with both hand and machine tools, though it may cause slight tear-out on end grain and during planing. It glues, nails, and screws easily, but pre-drilling is recommended for nailing due to its density. When staining, note that Walnut has a natural deep color that may require testing to achieve desired results. Sanding should be done with progressive grits to avoid tool dulling, and it finishes beautifully with oils or varnishes, revealing its rich grain.

Common Uses

Common uses for Walnut include high-quality furniture, cabinetry, fine woodworking projects, gunstocks, musical instruments, and interior millwork. Its aesthetic appeal and workability make it ideal for decorative applications where a luxurious appearance is desired.
